Bullying and Harassment
(WH&S Act)
8.2, 8.3 Staff will understand Bullying and Harassment in the context of the WH&S Act, identifying the impact as well as strategies to reduce the incidents and reporting requirements. Scenarios from the staff are encouraged.
Compulsory Reporting – Elder Abuse and unexplained Absences 8.3 Review legislation and detailed description of definitions of Physical and Sexual Abuse, signs and symptoms as well as reporting requirements. Staff will explore strategies when consumers are absent without explanation, reporting and assistive strategies. Staff are encouraged to seek clarification for situations in their work place.
Elder abuse 8.3
Review legislation and detailed description of definitions and signs and symptoms of abuse. Staff identify their role and responsibility in reporting and advocacy. Staff are encouraged to ask questions and discuss areas of concern to ensure a thorough understanding of this topic.
Infection Prevention and Control (general theory) 3.8, 8.3 The program includes managing the risk of Infection in an Aged care facility, common types of pathogens, standard Precautions and Additional Precautions. Additional focus on food handling and cleaning as applicable to all staff. Staff are encouraged to share their work place strategies and protocols

Manual handling – Theory

8.3, 3.1 Suitable for clinical staff, with provision for non-clinical. This topic reviews safe manual handling techniques including basic physiology and common injuries with a lifting activity. Incident management is included.
Manual Handling – practical
(WH&S Act)
3.1, 8.3 Suitable for small groups. This activity includes slide sheets, stand aid lifters, walking belts, wheel chairs, assisting a consumer to stand and transfer, ‘talking a consumer up’ from the floor. Full hoists can be included by negotiation.

8.3 This topic reviews strategies to ensure the safety of staff in Aged Care. Violence or threats of violence from consumers (Managing Challenging behaviours), Family members (Managing Conflict) or a Colleague (Bullying and Harrassment) or an Intruder (Emergence Response) are explored with a focus on avoidance, de-escalation and emergency response. Basic Self-defense can be included in this session by an external provider.
